Mikhail Romanov's early kopecks were struck under conditions barely distinguishable from the Time of Troubles that preceded his 1613 election — mint infrastructure was fragmented, silver supply erratic, and the dies cut by hand for each individual piece. The "wire money" flan format used here descends directly from Ivan III's 15th-century reforms and changed almost nothing across two centuries of production, which makes precise dating within a reign reliant almost entirely on legend spelling variants and die punch analysis rather than any physical evolution of the type.
