| Obverse description | Tsar on horseback facing right, depicted as an armored equestrian figure brandishing a spear or lance downward toward a prostrate foe beneath the horse's hooves, in the traditional Russian wire money style. The horseman wears a crown and is rendered in the crude but vigorous hammered relief characteristic of early Romanov coinage. The mint mark МО (abbreviation for МОСКВА) appears in the lower field beneath the horse, identifying the Moscow Mint. The flan is irregular in shape, as is typical of chekhi (wire money) produced by cutting silver wire and striking between hand-cut dies. |
