| Obverse description | A mounted horseman depicted in right-facing profile, riding a galloping horse and wielding a spear or lance — the iconic design that gave the kopeck its name (from 'копьё', spear). The rider is rendered in the schematic style typical of wire money (cheshuykas) of the period. Beneath the horse's hooves appear the Cyrillic mintmark letters ЮР, identifying the Novgorod mint official or die-cutter responsible for this emission. The design occupies the full irregular flan, characteristic of hammered wire coinage. |
