| Obverse description | Crowned equestrian figure of the Tsar, depicted in profile facing right, mounted on a horse and brandishing a spear or lance in the raised right hand, rendered in the archaic flat relief characteristic of Russian wire money of the period. The rider wears a pointed crown and long robes, and the horse is shown in a dynamic stepping pose. Beneath the horse, in the lower field, appear the Cyrillic mint mark characters Я and ДМ, identifying this piece as a product of the Velikiy Novgorod mint. The flan is irregular in shape, as typical of chekanka wire coinage of the sixteenth century. |
