Obverse description A mounted horseman depicted in right profile at full gallop, brandishing a spear or lance — the iconic image from which the kopeck takes its name (from 'kopyo,' meaning spear). The rider is shown on a charging horse with dynamic posture. Beneath the hooves of the horse appear the mint letters ФС, denoting the Novgorod mint and the mint official's initials, struck in the field below the horse. The design is characteristic of the wire money (cheshuyка) tradition, with the image irregular in outline due to the flan preparation technique.
