| Obverse description | Depiction of a crowned equestrian figure, identified as the Tsar, facing right and mounted on a horse rendered in profile. The rider wears a crown and long robes, and carries an elongated lance or spear directed downward toward a prostrate figure or serpent beneath the horse's hooves, evoking the traditional St. George motif adapted for Russian coinage. The design is executed in the characteristic bold, somewhat schematic relief of mid-16th-century Russian hammered wire coinage. The irregular flan, typical of the wire-money (chekanka) technique, partially clips the design at the edges. Mint marks С and МН, identifying the Pskov Mint, appear in the field. |
