Fyodor I ruled in name only — effective power rested entirely with Boris Godunov, his brother-in-law, who governed the tsardom throughout this period. Fyodor's reign is the terminal point of the Rurikid dynasty; he died without an heir in 1598, directly precipitating the Time of Troubles. Wire-cut kopecks of this type were struck by hand-hammering silver rod between engraved dies, a method producing the characteristic irregular planchets that define the series. The НЕ mint mark denotes Velikiy Novgorod.
