Obverse description Crowned horseman (the Tsar) depicted in right profile, mounted on a galloping horse and holding a spear — the classic kopeck type known as the 'wire money' (cheshuitsa) design. The figure is rendered in the conventional flat, stylized manner typical of late 16th- to early 17th-century Russian hammered coinage. Beneath the horse's hooves appears the mint signature В НОРΘ (Velikiy Novgorod). The date Рθ, corresponding to the Russian year 7109 (= 1601 AD), is inscribed in the field.
