Boris Godunov's reign lasted just seven years, and his wire money — produced by the traditional Russian chekanka method of cutting rod into small blanks and striking with a handmade die — was minted at Novgorod under tight controls meant to curb the counterfeiting that had plagued earlier reigns. The ГЕ mint mark identifies Novgorod production, with the Cyrillic date НРАI converting to 7111 in the Byzantine calendar, placing this piece in 1603.

Godunov died in April 1605, within two years of this coin's striking, as the Time of Troubles consumed the dynasty he had fought to establish.
