Obverse description Depiction of a mounted horseman (the Tsar) facing right, shown in profile astride a horse, holding a spear or lance directed downward in a striking pose — the traditional equestrian motif emblematic of Russian wire money kopecks of this period. The figure is rendered in low relief on the irregularly shaped planchet, characteristic of the hammered wire coinage technique. Design details are stylized and somewhat crude, consistent with the hand-engraved dies used at the Pskov Mint during the reign of Boris Godunov.
