Boris Godunov's reign began not through dynastic succession but election — the Zemsky Sobor voted him tsar in 1598 following the extinction of the Rurik line with Feodor I. His wire-cut kopecks follow the same hammered flan technology used since Ivan the Terrible's monetary reform of 1535, when the kopeck was standardized as the backbone of Muscovite coinage. The Б-О-М designation identifies Moscow mint production, with the tsar's name spelled across the reverse in the abbreviated form conventional for the type.
Godunov died in April 1605 as Polish-backed forces supporting the False Dmitry advanced on Moscow. Coins from his reign circulated heavily through the subsequent Time of Troubles.
