Obverse description Armored equestrian figure of the Tsar depicted in right profile, mounted on a galloping horse, brandishing a lance downward in the characteristic Russian wire money tradition. The rider wears a crown, and the composition is rendered in the highly schematic style typical of late 16th-century Russian chekanka coinage. The mint mark МО appears beneath the horse's hooves in Cyrillic characters, identifying the Moscow Mint. The design occupies the entirety of the irregular flan, with the image often partially off-flan due to the nature of wire money production.
