Johann Ernst von Thun ordered a series of klippe issues in 1688, the square-cut format serving a ceremonial rather than commercial purpose — these were presentation pieces distributed at court, not coins intended to pass through market hands. The ⅑ thaler denomination is among the more obscure fractional divisions in the Salzburg series, a denomination that makes little practical sense and underscores the purely commemorative function of the issue.
Probszt remains the authoritative reference for Salzburg archiepiscopal coinage, and the numbering here cross-references cleanly with Zöttl's earlier cataloging work on the klippe types specifically.
