The Andhrabhrityas — sometimes rendered as the "servants of the Andhras" — were a subordinate dynasty operating in the shadow of the Satavahana kingdom, issuing lead coinage that circulated in the Deccan during a period when the Satavahanas themselves were fragmenting under pressure from the Western Kshatrapas. Lead was not a fallback material in this region; it was a deliberate regional choice, with the Deccan's abundant galena deposits making it an economically rational medium for low-denomination exchange well before and throughout the early centuries CE.
