| Beschrijving keerzijde | Four-line Kufic Arabic inscription filling the field, presenting the mint name Kurzuwan and the Islamic declaration of faith (kalima). The legend is contained within a border of connected dots, which frames the entire reverse design. The stark, text-dominated layout is characteristic of emergency siege coinage produced under extreme circumstances during the Mongol invasion of 1221. |

Kurzuwan was besieged by Mongol forces during the catastrophic 1221 campaign in which Genghis Khan's son Tolui swept through Khurasan, destroying city after city. Emergency copper jitals of this type were struck by the local malik — his name unrecorded — specifically to pay defenders and maintain some semblance of civic function during the siege. Whether the city fell or negotiated terms is not clearly established in the sources, but the coin itself is direct physical evidence of a functioning mint under extreme military pressure.
