Obverse description High-relief allegorical scene depicting a female figure, representing France or the Republic, supporting a fallen wounded soldier with one arm while raising his rifle aloft with the other, both figures rendered in dynamic composition against a plain field. The dates 1870 and 18.. appear to the left, and the motto QVAND MÊME to the right. The legend LIGVE DES PATRIOTES arcs around the upper rim, with the engravers' signatures A. MERCIE INV. and H. DUBOIS INC. at the lower periphery.

Reverse description A vertical sword planted on a stone parapet serves as a flagpole, supporting a large draped flag inscribed with text referencing the patrie, with radiating sunbeams emanating from the top of the sword in the background. A cityscape with a prominent Gothic cathedral, likely that of Strasbourg, appears to the right, and a ruined fortification to the left. The monogram L·D·P appears near the top of the composition, with the date MAI 1882 in the lower left field.
