| Obverse description | The obverse displays the arms of the province of Utrecht: a quartered shield bearing a rampant lion and a castle, surmounted by a crown and flanked by foliate mantling. The surrounding Latin legend reads CONCORDIA RES PARVAE CRESCVNT, interrupted by a small floral ornament. The date appears divided across the field, flanking the shield. The entire design is characteristic of the Dutch Rijksdaalder type struck for the province of Utrecht in the mid-seventeenth century. Two Russian countermarks applied in 1655 — a rectangular cartouche bearing the date 1655 and a circular stamp with the mounted figure of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich — are impressed upon the host coin's surface. |
