Obverse description Within a beaded border, Christ Emmanuel is depicted enthroned facing, nimbate, wearing imperial loros, raising His right hand in benediction and holding the Gospels in His left. The nimbus cross is visible behind the head. The abbreviated Greek legend IC-XC flanks the figure in the field to left and right respectively, identifying the Saviour in the traditional Byzantine manner.

Reverse description Emperor Theodore II Doukas Laskaris stands facing in full imperial regalia, wearing a crown and loros, holding a labarum-sceptre in his right hand and the globus cruciger (anexikakia) in his left. To the right, the Virgin Mary (Theotokos), nimbed and orans, places her right hand upon the emperor's head in a crowning gesture, conferring divine legitimacy upon his rule. The Greek legend naming the emperor is disposed in the field. A border of dots frames the composition.
