Emperor Andronikos II Palaiologos kneels to the left and co-emperor Michael IX kneels to the right, both shown in imperial loros costume with proskynesis gesture. The composition emphasizes divine legitimation of joint imperial authority, rendered in the formal, hierarchical style characteristic of late Byzantine coinage. Greek inscriptions identifying the emperors appear in the fields. |
