Obverse description Facing bust of the Theotokos (Virgin Mary) depicted nimbate in the orant posture, with both arms raised and hands open at each side in the traditional Byzantine intercessory gesture. A medallion bearing the nimbate bust of the Christ Child (Emmanuel) is displayed upon her chest. The legend, rendered in Greek characters, is divided at left and right by the figure and reads as a devotional acclamation. The effigy is executed in the formal, hieratic style characteristic of mid-eleventh-century Byzantine coinage.
