A cruciform nimbus frames the head, and the Greek legend IҺS XIS RЄX RЄGNANTIҺM — identifying Christ as the Reigning King — is disposed in the field around the figure. The design is rendered in the flat, hieratic style characteristic of middle Byzantine gold coinage. |
