Constantine IX Monomachos came to power not through military achievement or dynastic right but by marrying Empress Zoe at age 42 — his third marriage, her third emperor. His reign was fiscally disastrous: he systematically debased the gold coinage and disbanded the Armenian frontier troops in favor of tax revenue, a decision that left Anatolia exposed to Seljuk incursion within a decade of his death. The histamenon of his reign sits at the beginning of that debasement curve, still nominally full-weight but increasingly variable in actual gold fineness across the issue years.
