| Obverse description | Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Philip I (the Arab) facing right, depicted with naturalistic portraiture characteristic of the mid-third century Roman provincial tradition. The emperor wears a radiate crown, paludamentum, and cuirass, conveying imperial military authority. The circular Greek legend surrounds the bust, reading ΑΥ Κ Μ ΙΟΥΛΙ ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟϹ ΕΥ ϹΕΒ, proclaiming his full imperial titulature. The field shows considerable wear consistent with circulation use, and the flan is broad and slightly irregular. The overall style is typical of the Macedonian provincial mint at Beroea during the reign of Philip I. |
