Segesta's bronze coinage of this period reflects the city's precarious position in western Sicily — caught between Carthaginian alliance and Syracusan pressure, the city was fighting for survival in a very literal sense. The Segestans had appealed to Carthage in 410 BC, triggering decades of intervention that reshaped the entire island's political order. Small fractional bronzes like this hexas circulated during exactly that violent interval.
