The Biatec-type hexadrachms are among the most extensively studied Celtic coinages precisely because several examples were found in a single hoard near Bratislava in the late 19th century, giving scholars an unusually concentrated dataset for a tribe whose broader monetary output remains fragmentary. The Boii had been expelled from Bohemia by Germanic pressure around 50 BC, and coins of this type may straddle that displacement — struck both before and after the tribe fragmented across the middle Danube region.
The name "Biatec" derives from inscriptions on the coins themselves, believed to identify either a chieftain or a minting authority — the distinction remains unresolved.
