| Reverse description | A single deep incuse square dominates the reverse, punched into the flan by a square punch applied during the striking process, a technique universally employed on the earliest electrum coinage of western Anatolia. The incuse cavity is roughly quadrilateral with slightly irregular walls and an uneven, striated floor bearing traces of the hammer blow. The surrounding flat border, formed by the spread of the metal under the anvil, is plain and undecorated. No subsidiary punches or subdivisions are visible within the incuse. This simple reverse type is consistent with the primitive monetary technology of the earliest Ionian electrum series, circa 625–600 BC. |
