| Obverse description | Facing left, the idealized head of Persephone is rendered in fine Syracusan style, her flowing hair bound with a wreath of grain ears, evoking her role as goddess of the harvest and the underworld. The hair falls in thick, naturalistic waves behind the neck, and a poppy head is visible in the field to the rear, a further attribute of the goddess. The circular legend ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΟΝ runs along the upper periphery, identifying the issuing city. The portrait displays the accomplished engraving characteristic of early Hieronian bronzes, with carefully modeled facial features and a dotted border framing the design. |
