Reverse description A horse rearing and bucking to the left with reins loose and flying free, depicted in vigorous motion above a horizontal exergue line. Beneath the exergue line appears the ethnic inscription ΚΑΙΝΟΝ in Greek characters, identifying the issuing community of Kainon. On some specimens, an eight-rayed star appears above the horse's back as an additional control mark. The composition is energetic and reflects the accomplished die-cutting tradition of ancient Sicily.
