| Obverse description | Laureate head of Apollo facing left, rendered in fine archaic-classical style with flowing locks of hair cascading behind the neck. The laurel wreath is depicted with carefully articulated leaves crowning the deity's brow. The epithet APXEΓETAΣ (Archegetes, meaning 'Founder' or 'Leader'), a title of Apollo as patron deity of Tauromenion, appears as a vertical legend to the left of the portrait. The modelling of the face is bold and expressive, with strong facial features characteristic of Sicilian bronze coinage of the late fourth to early third century BC. |
