Gela's coinage effectively ends here. The city was destroyed by the Mamertines in 282 BC and again, more permanently, by the Carthaginians under Hamilcar in 405 BC — but a reduced settlement limped on, and later Timoleon's resettlement in the 330s briefly revived civic production. By the late third century, with Gelon II's defeat at the Battle of the Aegates Islands in 241 BC having collapsed Syracusan power, peripheral Sicilian mints like Gela were producing bronze at minimal scale before urban life effectively ceased under Roman consolidation.
