| Beschrijving voorzijde | Facing right, the forepart of a bull's head rendered in bold relief, the muzzle slightly downturned and the eye indicated by a raised pellet. The animal wears a beaded or jeweled collar about the neck, depicted as a vertical string of pellets arranged in a diagonal row to the left of the head. The design is executed in the archaic Ionian style characteristic of early electrum coinage, with summary but vigorous modeling of the facial features and horns. Among the earliest coined money in human history, the electrum fractions of western Anatolia precede any surviving written record of their own production — we know almost nothing about who authorized them, who controlled the electrum supply, or how exchange rates were set. The natural alloy varied significantly in gold-to-silver ratio depending on the river source, and there is reasonable scholarly debate over whether early recipients could even reliably assess what they were accepting.
