The Arcadian League coinage of this period represents one of the earliest federal coinages in the Greek world — a deliberate monetary union among Arcadian poleis who shared ethnic identity but rarely political coherence. Tegea's participation is notable given the city's complicated relationship with Spartan dominance in the Peloponnese; Sparta had long used Tegea as a buffer and client, yet the city minted under League authority during precisely the decades when Spartan hegemony was under its sharpest pressure following the helot revolt of 464 BC.
