Additional information

The Achaean League's federal coinage was one of the ancient world's more deliberate experiments in monetary unification — member city-states surrendered independent silver issues in favor of a shared federal type, with the city of origin noted by a local symbol or monogram. Messene's participation carried political weight beyond the monetary: the city had a fractious history with the League, having been forcibly incorporated after a period of Macedonian-backed resistance.

This hemidrachm falls within the final years before the Roman dissolution of the League following Pydna in 168 BC, after which federal silver coinage effectively ceased.
