Beschrijving keerzijde Eagle standing right, with a torch and quiver placed before it in the field. The entire design is contained within a shallow incuse square, a distinctive feature of Stratonikeian coinage. The eagle, rendered in the Hellenistic tradition, serves as a symbol of Zeus. The magistrate's name appears in the legend, identifying this issue within the civic coinage series of Stratonikeia.

Aanvullende informatie

Stratonikeia, the Carian city refounded by Antiochos I and named for his wife Stratonike, issued civic coinage with increasing autonomy as Seleucid power collapsed following Apameia in 188 BC. By the window of this issue, the city had come under Rhodian influence and then, after 167 BC, operated as a nominally free polis — a status Rome periodically confirmed and the Rhodians bitterly resented. The magistrate name Menestratos appears on a tight cluster of issues assignable to this decade by die study and hoard evidence.
