Ardakhshir I of Persis — not to be confused with the later Sasanian founder of the same name — ruled as a semi-autonomous dynast under Seleucid overlordship following Alexander's conquest, and these small silver fractions represent the earliest indigenous Persian coinage to reassert local dynastic identity after Achaemenid collapse. The frataraka rulers of Persis occupied a peculiar political position: nominally subordinate to Antioch, yet issuing their own coinage with distinctly Iranian religious imagery, a quiet assertion of cultural continuity the Seleucids apparently tolerated.
