Antiochos VI was installed as a child king around 144 BC by the general Diodotos Tryphon, who used him as a figurehead to seize control of the Seleucid throne from Demetrios II. The arrangement lasted only a few years before Tryphon had the boy murdered — probably in 142 BC — and declared himself king outright. The entire reign was essentially a military usurpation dressed in dynastic legitimacy.
Apameia on the Axios (in Macedonia) is an unusual mint attribution for a Seleucid issue of this period, reflecting the fragmented geographic reach of the empire during its civil conflicts.
