Reverse description Plain, deeply recessed square incuse punch occupying the greater part of the reverse field, with a raised border rim visible around its perimeter. The incuse is irregular in outline and without any interior design or legend, reflecting the primitive striking technique employed at Korkyra during the earliest phase of its silver coinage. The surface within the incuse is rough and granular, a direct result of the hammered fabric. This type of reverse is characteristic of the earliest Archaic issues of Korkyra, predating the introduction of figured reverse types.

Additional information

Korkyra — modern Corfu — was among the earliest Greek colonies to strike its own coinage, having established a mint by the late sixth century BC. The island's wealth derived almost entirely from its position astride the Adriatic trading routes, and its monetary output reflects that mercantile orientation: small, silver, and built for practical exchange rather than civic display. HGC 6#42 is among the earliest fractions attributable to the Korkyran series.
