Trikka, a minor Thessalian city whose chief claim in antiquity was as the supposed birthplace of Asklepios, produced coinage that punches well above its political weight. The city sat in the upper Peneios valley and controlled one of the oldest healing sanctuaries in the Greek world — a sanctuary that predates the more famous one at Epidauros and may explain why Thessalian coinage from this region shows such consistent iconographic investment relative to the city's modest size.
The BCD collection, from which the primary reference here derives, remains the definitive scholarly benchmark for Thessalian bronzes and silvers; BCD Thessaly II lot 767 established the die linkage classification still used for this type.
