Hemidrachm - 87th Olympiad

Struck at Olympia to coincide with the 87th Olympiad, this issue belongs to a sanctuary mint operating under the authority of the Eleans, who controlled the Games and their finances for much of the classical period — interrupted only by the brief Pisatan seizure of 364 BC. Olympian coinage was not civic currency in any conventional sense; it was produced primarily to service the enormous volume of commercial activity surrounding the quadrennial festival, when tens of thousands of visitors converged on the sanctuary.

HGC 5, 426 places this among the earlier hemidrachms of the series, predating the fuller stylistic development seen in later Elean issues from the fourth century.
