Nesos — Greek for "island" — was a small settlement on or near the Axios River delta in ancient Macedonia, and its coinage output was extremely limited. The civic identity embedded in the name itself may reflect a geographically isolated community using coin production to assert a degree of autonomy within a region increasingly dominated by the Macedonian kingdom under Philip II and his successors.
The SNG France and BMC references cite only a handful of specimens, making this among the rarer issues from the northern Aegean periphery.
