Sinope was the dominant Greek colony on the Black Sea's southern coast, controlling enough of the regional trade in salted tuna — a prized commodity shipped across the Mediterranean — that its mint operated with unusual consistency through periods when many Pontic cities suspended production. The hemidrachm denomination served the small-transaction economy of a port city, not the prestige coinage of a regional power.
The city fell to Mithridates VI around 183 BC, but this type predates that absorption, placing it squarely within Sinope's period of genuine civic autonomy.
