| Beschrijving voorzijde | Facing gorgoneion (Medusa head) depicted full face, occupying the entire field; the visage displays bulging eyes, a broad flattened nose, a wide open mouth with protruding tongue and visible teeth, rendered in the archaic apotropaic style characteristic of Parion coinage. Wavy serpentine locks radiate from the head and two serpents are entwined around the neck and lower face, their bodies coiling outward into the field. The high-relief modelling and bold, expressive treatment are typical of fourth-century Greek die-cutting from this Propontine mint. |
