This characteristic incuse reverse type is typical of Chersonesos coinage of the fourth century BC and served as a die-control or magistrate mark. |

Chersonesos — the Thracian Chersonese, the long peninsula separating the Aegean from the Hellespont — controlled one of the most strategically vital bottlenecks in the ancient world, and its hemidrachms reflect that commercial intensity. These coins circulated so heavily across the Black Sea trade network that they were deliberately countermarked by recipient cities to re-authorize their use, a practice that makes pristine, unmarked examples genuinely uncommon. The date range spans the period of Athenian reassertion in the region through Philip II's eventual absorption of the peninsula into Macedonian control in 338 BC.
