Bargylia was a coastal Carian city whose civic coinage of this period reflects a community navigating the political turbulence left by Rome's reorganization of western Asia Minor after Apamea in 188 BC. The city retained enough autonomy to issue its own silver, which was no small thing in a region where Roman settlements of territorial disputes routinely extinguished local mint activity altogether.
The SNG von Aulock reference ties this piece to one of the more rigorously assembled collections of Asia Minor coinage, making attribution unusually solid for a mint of this size.
