Additional information

These years bracket one of the most catastrophic episodes in Sicilian history. The Athenian expedition of 415–413 BC ended in total destruction at Syracuse, and Akragas — though it had stayed neutral — found itself drawn into the subsequent Carthaginian offensive that began in 409 BC. Hannibal Mago sacked Selinus and Himera first; by 406 BC his successor Himilco had besieged Akragas itself, forcing the city's complete abandonment after an eight-month siege.

This hemidrachm was struck in the final years of that doomed city, almost certainly while Carthaginian forces were already operating elsewhere on the island.
