Obverse description Land tortoise depicted in high relief, seen from above, with a finely segmented and domed carapace divided into clearly articulated scutes. The plastron and four limbs are visible extending from beneath the shell, and the head protrudes at the top. The Greek letter alpha (A) appears to the right of the design in the field, serving as an initial of the issuing city Kydonia. The figure is well-centred on the flan and rendered in a naturalistic archaic style characteristic of Cretan mint production.
