Additional information

Matthias of Rammung served as Bishop of Speyer from 1464 until his death in 1478, a tenure marked by persistent conflict with the city of Speyer over jurisdictional authority — the bishop's secular power had been progressively eroded by the increasingly independent imperial city. Bracteates of this type, struck on flans so thin they rarely survived handling without creasing, exist today in genuinely small numbers.
