Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld was itself a product of the endless partition of Ernestine Saxony, carved out in 1699 when the duchy was reconstituted under Johann Ernst following yet another inheritance division among the Wettin branches. The heller, by this period, was the smallest unit of account in circulation across the German states — so low in purchasing power that issuers often produced them more out of feudal obligation than practical necessity.
The seven-year window of this issue spans the reign of Franz Josias, who succeeded in 1716 at age twelve under regency. Copper coinage of this type and size rarely survived circulation in attributable condition, which explains its relative scarcity in reference collections today.
