Obverse description Facing left, the veiled and wreathed head of Demeter rendered in fine archaic Greek style, the hair bound with a wreath of grain ears, the facial features sensitively modelled in relief. Below the truncation, a diminutive seal oriented to the left serves as the civic badge of Phokaia, a device consistently employed on Phocaean electrum coinage as a punning civic symbol. The flan is slightly irregular, characteristic of hammered electrum issues of this period. No legend is present, the imagery alone identifying the issuing city.
