| Obverse description | Facing right, the helmeted head of Ares rendered in high relief in the archaic Greek style. The crested Attic-style helmet is prominently detailed with a serrated crest and is adorned with a protome of a griffin facing left on the cheekpiece or bowl. The facial features are boldly modeled, with a strong profile, prominent nose, and open lips, characteristic of the refined engraving tradition of Mytilene. The flan is slightly irregular, as is typical of hammered electrum coinage of this period. |
